The Sanity We Are Born With: A Discussion of Meditation & Mind (For Ages 16 & Over)

In his book, The Sanity We Are Born With, author, Chögyam Trungpa, teaches that all of us are born with what he terms "basic sanity," or inherent goodness, health, and clear perception. Helping ourselves and others to connect with this intrinsic ground of sanity and health is the subject of a collection of teachings, which the author gave to Western psychologists, psychotherapists, and students of meditation over a number of years. Editor Carolyn Rose Gimian has arranged and introduced a selection of these lectures and essays that summarize his presentation of Buddhist psychology to Westerners.

Using this text as a basis for discussion, the discussions will explore:

  • Meditation as a way of training the mind and cultivating mindfulness
  • Nurturing our intrinsic health and basic sanity
  • Concepts of mind, ego, and intelligence, and how these ideas can be employed in relating to oneself and others

Participants are not required to bring their own copies of the book – there will be copies available to use at each discussion.

Participants can join the discussion at any time, attending all discussions is not required.  Previous experience with meditation is helpful but not a requirement.
